The Community Nurse Health Association provides primary healthcare and supportive services to low income families in the western suburbs.

More than 3,000 west suburban residents turn to Community Nurse every year. Our patients are our neighbors, local small business owners and families in temporary crisis. Our patients are employed but their employers do not offer medical insurance. Our patients have jobs, sometimes two, and still have to choose between rent, food and medical care. We are here to help keep our community healthy.

Governor Quinn Signs Good Samaritan Law Amendment
Governor QuinnOn Saturday, June 19th, Governor Pat Quinn signed into law HB 5744, which amended the Good Samaritan Laws of Illinois to permit providers who are licensed to practice in all the fields of medicine and dentistry in other states to volunteer their services within the State of Illinois without applying for Illinois licensure (which currently can take several weeks and cost several hundred dollars). This legislation will make Illinois only the second state in the nation ( with Tennessee) to provide such Good Samaritan immunity to out-of state providers and will benefit patients in free clinics located throughout the State of Illinois, especially those who may need to rely on providers in nearby neighboring states. It will also permit groups like “R.A.M.” (Remote Area Medical) to bring large teams of volunteer providers into the State to provide care in underserved areas.

Ken Nelson, MD, who has served as the volunteer Medical Director of Community Nurse Health Association ‘s free clinic for adults since 1992, in LaGrange, proposed this legislation over one year ago. Dr. Nelson, and dozens of other local physicians, have volunteered their services at Community Nurse’s adult clinic for two decades, providing primary and specialty care services to thousands of low-income, uninsured residents of the western suburbs of Cook County. With the help of the Illinois State Medical Society, and State Rep. Saviano, this bill won approval of both the Illinois House of Representative and the Illinois State Senate.
